Disney claimed that Peg is a Pekingese...however, as often happens with animated dogs (such as Rita from Oliver & Company and Sasha from All Dogs Go to Heaven II), she was mislabeled. Malachy just won Best in Show at Westminster, and one look at him should suggest to you that Peg isn't a Peke. And you'd be right. Similar, but not quite. Thus, we take a look at the Tibetan Spaniel and the Lhasa Apso--two Tibetan breeds--and realize that Peg is Tibetan through and through! I see her as a cross between these two, heavier on the "Spaniel" (in quotes because Tibbies are not true spaniels. The longer coat and ears would be the traits inherited from her Lhasa parent.) There might even be traces of yet a third Tibetan breed, the Tibetan "Terrier" (not a true terrier!), in her. I only mention that one because of the slightly questionable scale of the dogs in the pound scene. They include an English Cocker Spaniel (Lady), a Bulldog, a Chihuahua (tiny toy breed), a small-to-mid-sized terrier mix, a smooth Dachshund, and a Borzoi (a giant-sized dog.) The proportions are acceptable as they are, and traces of Tibetan Terrier in Peg might just serve to make her a bit larger in relation to the others...but it isn't necessary to imagine their presence. Tibetan Spaniel/Lhasa Apso works just fine for her appearance and size. Thus she is related to Lady and Faye (the Puppy-in-My-Pocket Lhasas, not Lady from the movie!), and maybe more distantly to Katie (the Tibetan Terrier.) Because there may be a trace of Peke, too, she COULD be a relative of Minty as well! n_~
